Bucas Rug Wash & Conditioner

How to Wash Your Horse Rugs: A Fun and Easy Guide!

If you’re lucky enough to have a washing machine that’s up for the task, now’s the perfect moment to get those rugs fresh and clean. With the lovely Irish spring weather, you’ve got the best drying conditions—natural air drying is always the way to go!

Step 1: Prep Your Rug for Washing

Before you toss that rug into the machine, let’s get it ready for a good clean! Make sure to close all fastenings—strap up those front buckles and cover all hook and loop fastenings where possible. This prevents unwanted clumps of hair or dirt from sticking to the straps.

Give the rug a good shake to knock off any heavy mud or dirt, and brush off as much hair from the inside as possible. Remember, all that grime ends up in your washing machine’s filter, and you don’t want a clog when you’re washing your show whites the day before an event! Trust us, you don’t want to be calling a plumber because your machine is backed up with rug debris!

Step 2: Choose the Right Wash

Only use Bucas Rug Wash for cleaning your Bucas products. The special formula won’t break down the waterproof barrier on your rug like regular washing powders can. This wash is perfect for all your Bucas items—rugs, halters, saddle pads, and even girths!

Step 3: Mind the Temperature!

The magic number is **30°C!** Forget about boiling your rugs clean—that’s a fast track to turning your 6’6″ Power Turnout into a chic new outfit for the cat. Not only will washing at a higher temperature void your Bucas warranty, but it could also shrink your rug! Stick to 30°C; it’s perfectly warm to get your items clean while preserving their longevity.

Step 4: Dry It Right!

When the washing cycle is done, promptly take your rug out of the machine. Don’t let it sit longer than necessary! If the sun’s shining, get creative with your drying spots—drape your rug over a gate, fence, or even a wheelbarrow! No sun? No worries—hanging it on a drying rack in the tack room or over the door in the barn will work just fine.

Step 5: Store It Smart!

Once your rug is dry, fold it neatly and pop it back into its Bucas bag. For easy access later in the year, label the bag with some masking tape and a marker, noting what’s inside and its size. Trust us, you’ll thank yourself when you’re trying to find it again!

Now you’re all set—happy rug washing, and enjoy that fresh spring clean!
